About Chesapeake Technology Inc. & SonarWiz

Chesapeake Technology Inc. (CTI) is a globally recognized software company serving the marine survey and geospatial community. Our flagship product, SonarWiz, is widely used by commercial survey operators, scientific institutions, and global navies to interpret and manage complex sonar and hydrographic datasets. We operate as a small, focused engineering team that values deep technical thinking, respect, curiosity, and collaborative problem-solving.

The Opportunity

We are expanding SonarWiz with modern web-based and high-performance geospatial capabilities, enabling new ways for users to visualize, interact with, and analyze large-scale sonar datasets. As a key engineer, you will help build scalable workflows, visualization layers, and performant systems that make complex marine data more accessible and actionable. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys full-stack ownership, solving visualization and rendering challenges, and enabling powerful domain-specific workflows in the browser.

What You’ll Build & Own (Key Responsibilities)

  • Develop full-stack features spanning backend services, APIs, and modern web interfaces.

  • Build interactive geospatial visualizations using frameworks such as Cesium, Deck.gl, Mapbox GL JS, or similar tools.

  • Engineer efficient rendering and real-time interaction with large datasets (e.g., sonar mosaics, tracklines, grids, point clouds).

  • Design and optimize data models and infrastructure for performance, scalability, and usability.

  • Work closely with hydrographic experts to translate real-world workflows into intuitive tooling.

  • Ensure responsiveness and usability when working with high-volume geospatial and scientific data.

  • (Optional depending on experience) Contribute to automated feature extraction and classification workflows.

What You Bring (Required Skills & Experience)

  • Strong experience in full-stack development, covering backend APIs, databases, and modern front-end frameworks.

  • Proficiency in React, Vue, Angular, or a similar JavaScript framework.

  • Hands-on experience with visualization or mapping libraries such as Cesium, Deck.gl, Mapbox GL JS, Leaflet, or OpenLayers.

  • Ability to work with large or complex datasets where visualization performance and rendering efficiency are critical.

  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, GCP) or distributed deployment environments.

  • Comfortable working autonomously in a small, collaborative engineering team.

  • Strong communication skills and curiosity in understanding specialized user needs.

Bonus:

  • Background in GIS, hydrography, survey tools, ocean mapping, or scientific computing.

  • Knowledge of WebGL, GPU optimization, or real-time rendering.

  • Experience with ML-driven classification or segmentation workflows.

Why Join our Team?

  • Meaningful Impact: Your work will be relied upon by global navies, scientists, and commercial marine operators.

  • Full Ownership: You’ll own major components end-to-end, from design through deployment.

  • Deep Technical Challenge: Work at the intersection of visualization, performance engineering, and large-scale geospatial data.
